Events (事件) 2007 Events (事件) 9th World Wushu Championships in Beijing November 2007 On Saturday the 14th of July 2007, the South African Wushu Federation hosted their annual South African National San Shou Championships. This event is the official National Championships and is used to rank members in their respective weight categories. Every second year, the event also serves as the official trials to select the National San Shou team, under the South African Wushu Federation, which is the Governing body for all Chinese Martial Arts, and a member of SASCOC. This year is a World Championship year, which meant that the SAWF used the National Championships as their official trials to select a San Shou team to compete at the World Championships. There should be a second selection tournament next year for the junior athletes (under 18) as the Youth World Championships takes place next year. San Shou is a full contact fighting sport / art, in which the fighters may use techniques such as kicks, punches, sweeps, take downs and throws to over power their opponent. The fights are full contact and continuous. It takes place on a raised platform, similar to a boxing ring, with no ropes around. Our school entered 14 competitors, who all faired extremely well. Most of the fighters won their first fights, and some even fought more than 6 times. We are extremely proud that 7 of our members received medals for their achievements in this event. Our school took back 1 Gold Medal (Sherri Dorey), 1 Silver medal (O Nelly Butho Ndlovu), and 5 Bronze medals (Fransciskus Jospehus van Reenen, Calvin Wynne, Jaco Bester, Freddie Bieldt, Andre Greyling). We are extremely proud in Sherry Dorrey, who has been selected by the South African Wushu Federation to form part of the official Protea National Wushu Team that will represent South Africa at the 9th World Wushu Championships which will take place in Beijing, China from 11th to the 17th of November 2007. This is an official national team recognized by the Department of Sports and Recreation as well as SASCOC (South African Sports Confederation & Olympic Committee) which will participate in the IOC recognized World Championships for the sport of Wushu. Sherry competed in the woman’s division, and really showed great skill and determination, which eventually resulted in her becoming the National Champion in her weight division. As the event was attended by schools from across South Africa, we were very impressed with the level of competition. The fighters all had a tough time competing, and they had to compete against various opponents in a ‘round robin’ manner. Sherry and Sifu Eduann will be leaving for Beijing in November 2007. We all want to wish Sherry good luck for her up coming event. If you need any further information regarding this tournament or regarding the sport/art of san shou, please visit the website of the South African Wushu Federation at www.sawushufederation.org, or feel free to contact me on the numbers listed herewith. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________2006 Events (事件) Dai Sing Pek Gwar 大聖劈掛Kung Fu SeminarThe famous Kung Fu teacher, Master Chow Keung (周強), is currently in South Africa and will be teaching kung fu seminars on Dai Sing Pek Gwar (大聖劈掛) style Kung Fu.
