Chief Instructor ( 師父)

Eduann Barnard (Sifu)

Sifu Eduann Barnard started his martial arts training in 1982 when he first started training in Funakushi karate. He soon discovered Chinese Martial Arts, and has been in love with Chinese Martial Arts and Chinese culture ever since.

Sifu Eduann was one of the instructors at the Original Choy Lay Fut School in Krugersdorp West, which at that time was run by Sifu Johan Randell under the guidance of Sifu Morne van der Schyff. The school was a branch school of the World Lee Koon Hung Association under Grandmaster Lee Koon Hung.

In the late 1990's, Sifu Morne van der Schyff appointed Sifu Eduann, and allowed him to open a school of his own. In November 1999, the Choy Lay Fut Chinese Martial Arts Academy opened our doors in Roodepoort and since then, we have grown to become one of the most popular and active Chinese Martial Academies in the country.

In the early 2000, Sifu Eduann became a student of Master Li Siu Hung, and invited Master Li to teach classes in South Africa. Sifu Eduann has also traveled to the USA and Hong Kong to receive further training under Master Li Siu Hung and other members of our Choy Lay Fut Family.

Between 1999 and 2001, Sifu Eduann was elected as the chairman of the original SA Wushu Federation and also served in various positions in the different Chinese Martial Arts bodies that followed that. He was also part of the South African National Kung Fu Team (Protea colours) from 1995 untill 1999. In 2001 he was selected to be part of the WPKA Kickboxing (Thai) National squad, but could unfortunatly not participate in the World Championships in Greece that year, therefor never officially received his National colours in this event.

Sifu Eduann is currently the head instructor of our academy, and also the head coordinator for the Lee Koon Hung Choy Lay Fut style in our country.

Sifu Eduann Barnard has also trained in various other styles. He trained Northern Shaolin (Shao Bei Quan 少北拳), TaijiMeihuatanglangquan (plum blossom mantis 太極拳蟷蜋), Bajiquan(八极拳), and Taijiquan 太極拳 with Master Wong Guang Quan and his son, Chris Wong. He also studied Yang Style Taiji from Sifu Victoria Lu, who since then moved to Argentina to continuo teaching over there.

On a trip to Hong Kong, Sifu Eduann met up with his Kung Fu brother and senior, Sifu Joe Keit from the USA. Sifu Joe was training with Master Chow Keung (周強), a very famous Tai Shing Pek Gwar (大聖劈掛) master in Hong Kong. Sifu Joe introduced him to Master Chow, and Eduann started taking some lessons with Sifu Chow. He also invited Master Chow to come to South Africa to teach some classes. When Sifu Chow came to SA, he really enjoyed the eagerness and determination of the South African students and decided to return to SA to come and teach full time at the Choy Lay Fut Chinese Martial Arts Academy. This was a great opportunity and it was something that Sifu Eduann grabbed with both hands.

Master Chow stayed in South Africa for a while and taught full time at our Academy. Sifu Chow returned to Hong Kong, but will be visiting SA regularly in order to teach classes here. He's son, Frankie Chow, is based in Johannesburg. Sifu Eduann also travels to Hong Kong often in order to train with Master Chow.

Sifu Eduann continuous to train under Sifu Chow Keung, and is learning and teaching the style of Tai Shing Pek Gwar (大聖劈掛). Presently he was selected to be the Gauteng Provincial Coach for the SAWF National San Shou team.
