San Shou (Kick Boxing) (散手/ 散打)

San Da is the original word used for Kung Fu style of fighting. It is still used in China today and basically refers to full contact Chinese kickboxing.

Literally translated, "San" means scattered or free or "Da" means "to hit."

San Da is also more commonly known to the West as San Shou or even Chinese Kickboxing. With slight differences to Western style Kickboxing or Thai Kickboxing, San Shou includes locks, throws, sweeps and other full contact fighting technique. to one of the most powerful styles of kung fu known today. It is a fast moving style, with allot of emphasis on flexible hips and fast, relaxed powerful movements.

San Shou is not just effective as a sport, it is also a recognized fighting style. In China, San Shou is taught to the Chinese Police service and the Chinese Army.

Because of its nature, San Shou is one of the fastest growing tournament style fighting "sport" form in the West. Authorities are debating the inclusion of Wushu and then San Shou, in the 2008 World Olympic Games.

In South Africa, San Shou is also a professional sport, which has become very popular amongst both spectators and fighters.

Our Academy is affiliated to various National kickboxing Authorities, and we often compete in San Shou, Thai boxing, Muay Thai and other stand up fighting tournaments. We also offer training and opportunities for prospective PRO fighters who wishes to make this sport, their occupation.

Our fighters can train as often as they like, and they are encouraged to workout out side of class too. Our fighters has won many Local and national San Shou, Thai Boxing and Muay Thai competitions, and we have made a name for ourselves as one of the top few San Shou schools in Gauteng.

Sherry San Shou picIn South Africa, San Shou is regulated by the SA Wushu Federation. Under this Federation, all San Shou instructors have to do an annual licensing exam to ensure high quality of San Shou in our country. All our instructors are licensed and we follow the same San Shou curriculum as set by the SAWF.

San Shou training is pretty tough, and offer a good physical work out. This class is very popular, not only amongst guys, but with ladies too. The obvious health benefits from such an extreme cardio workout, makes San Shou training very popular amongst people who want to lose weight and get in shape. Everyone in class train the exact same way, regardless of whether or not you will enter tournaments. This way, we make sure everyone who participate in this class, gets the maximum benefits from training at our school.

Although San Shou training is often seen (by many others) as a separate martial art form, its actually just an extension of our training. Our school teaches san shou, while keeping the essence of Choy Lay Fut Kung Fu, and we try incorporate all our fighting strategy from our style of kung fu.

Our team has been very successfully in the San Shou arena in South Africa, and we are known amongst our piers, as one of the top san shou schools in the country. Our team competes regularly, which helps them gain as much experience as they can.

Although San Shou is a full contact fighting style, the tournaments, specially those hosted by the SAWF, are pretty safe and well managed. The standard and level of competition is pretty high, and competitors from across this country, seem to grow (in skill level and in numbers), after every tournament.

San Shou is with out a doubt, a very safe, very realistic fighting sport, with a great future.
